Navigation might be the most important part of your wiki because if users can't find the facts, they can't use them.
Good navigation needs more than a menu down the left side of the page. It relies on landing or section pages that help users get around a topic. As you develop these, they should become the primary links on your menu.
Site Tree navigation is built automatically from the folder structure you establish when creating pages.
Static navigation is designed and updated by you.
In the Navigation Mode column, you can choose Site Tree
, Static Navigation
, or Custom Navigation
.
Automatic or Site Tree
navigation builds a menu from the folders and pages you create when you add them. You cannot create menu items in advance and then use the menu to navigate to them and write their contents.
Outline or Static Navigation
lets you design an outline for your wiki and update it: before you write, while you write, and after you write. You can add links to your outline and then fill them out later.
We recommend
Static Navigation
because it gives you more control and helps prevent users from getting lost in folders and pages.
User-controlled or Custom Navigation
lets users switch between the automatic Site Tree
and your Static Navigation
using buttons at the top of the menu.
We don't recommend the
Custom Navigation
option because users can become confused about how to navigate if they accidentally switch the style.

dialog. We recommend using all lowercase folder and page names. Use the shortest name that helps you find the page. Instead of spaces, use a

character.
You can reorganize or rename menu items anytime without changing page names or folder locations.
If you change the name or folder location of page, you must manually update any corresponding navigation or links.
